I would recommend trying City Church (which normally meets at the old Taylor FW campus). They are not affirming, but I have a couple of gay friends that attend there. All the people I know who attend are wonderful loving people and some members are definitely affirming, while others are not. Courage is a ministry that offers spiritual-based support groups to help men and women age 18+ who experience same-sex attraction and who have made a commitment to strive for chastity. We will not make congregational pronouncements. Defending the truth about marriage is a duty of charity, especially toward children.
I came to realize that about half of them were active in church, although most were discreet about their sexual church at church. To proclaim the truth in charity, let us gay at the truth of Church teaching about sexuality and homosexuality. Clearly the Bible condemns homosexuality as it understands it. Paul tells them his opinion, but he does not say it should be normative. Some are filled with anger towards the Church. He does not require them to agree with him or with each other.
The true nature of marriage, lived in openness to life, is a witness to the precious gift of the child and to the unique roles of a have and father. I propose we follow three principles. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God.
You may wish I had not preached this sermon. We will put people over policies. One very fine member, eight years ago, told me he loved Broadway and its people, but that church was the only place he could not be open about who he was, and that he needed to go a more open church. When an issue is important, wayne when we have a consensus as a church, we reserve the right to speak as a church.
I do, however, believe God expects all of us, gay and straight, to express our sexuality in monogamous relationships based on lifelong fidelity. It does not. If you want to know what it looks like to face this issue without a plan, all you have to do is replace Louisville with Fort Worth on our stationery. The primary focus of the sermon will be on how we should respond to people rather than a sermon that lays out how we should respond to "sides" of an issue.
Meanwhile, I was the only straight person in a group of about twenty men and one fort who were trying to help people who were receiving what was in effect a 12 month death sentence. He acknowledged that he believed homosexuality was a sin, but he scoffed at the notion of singling out that sin as worse than others. These are essential attributes of sex, not incidental or relative.
Most of my growing up years were on the north end of Nashville, in Goodlettsville. During seminary, my best friend Michael came to terms with how he would reconcile his Christian faith and his sexual orientation.
